Job Description:

The Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD) designs, builds, and tests superconducting magnets for use in particle accelerators world-wide. The SMD also builds magnets for various other applications (e.g., Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) and provides magnetic measurement services lab-wide.



This position involves supervising and training electrical technicians. Supervision will involve oversight of electrical support of daily magnet testing and magnet construction activities. In addition, Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD) is embarking on a modernization of its cryogenic test facility to prepare for the EIC Project and other R&D activities. Upgrades already underway include all systems, cryogenics, power supply, energy extraction, quench protection, data acquisition, field measurement, instrumentation, and monitoring systems. These upgrades include dismantling outdated systems and replacing them with systems of newer design from various sources.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for the control and coordination of a large complex technical support function for (SMD) Superconducting Magnet Division.
Either directly, or with the assistance of a subordinate technical supervisor, directs the work of highly skilled technicians in such areas as construction, maintenance, operation or development of specialized scientific equipment or facilities.
Plans and coordinates the work of a unit to ensure expeditious and efficient completion of assigned projects.
Provides technical advice, guidance and information to other Laboratory personnel. Develops and provides job specific training to staff.
Generally, operates with considerable latitude for unreviewed direction and decision-making.
Requires related experience in a broad technical field which includes demonstrated technical leadership.



Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
- a BS degree in a technical field and 8 years work experience or;
- a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 12 years' experience or;
- a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 13 years' relevant work experience or;
- 14 years relevant work experience.



Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires the equivalence of technical institute or associate degree in a related scientific or engineering field, fourteen (14) years related work experience that includes at least five (5) of those years as a Technical Project Supervisor or equivalent and demonstrated technical leadership.
Controlling and programming these systems using real time software based on LabView programing language.
Interfacing new systems with legacy systems is very technically challenging and will require a lot more extra effort to learn new instrument networking and communication protocols.



Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:



Individual may be required to:
climb ladders and/or work in confined spaces.
work in Oxygen Deficiency Hazard area.
work in High Noise environment.
in Static Magnetic fields area greater than 5 Gauss.
occasionally work off-hours, nights or weekends to support mission critical projects.

This position is on-site at the BNL location in Upton, NY.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $97300 - $130000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
