Supervisor, Consumer Underwriting

Summary
PenFed is hiring a Supervisor, Consumer Underwriting in Omaha, Nebraska. The primary purpose of this job is to lead the local Consumer Underwriting staff, provides direction and guidance to internal and external stakeholders within the organization relative to the Consumer Underwriting function, and acts as the technical subject matter expert on Consumer Underwriting to both advise on and execute higher-order and complex underwriting responsibilities.

Oversee and mentor Consumer Underwriters (CUWs) to ensure adequate training and performance is achieved.
Administer training plans for incoming CUWs on how to underwrite loans, use internal systems, etc.
Advise CUWs on complex underwriting decisions, participating in research, analysis, and due diligence to ensure consumer lending policy is enforced and the correct underwriting decision is made.
Monitor workflow management to track productivity within the department, including the preparation and distribution of reports.
Research and resolve complex member problems within delegated authority, including, but not limited to processing fee reversals and referring consumer loan applications to the Loan Review Committee as appropriate.
Maintain current working knowledge in all areas of PenFed products, services, policies, and procedures, with strong familiarity on loan processing to appropriately act on member and employee requests.
Complete a thorough analysis of loan application files to determine member's creditworthiness for the desired product, evaluating applications and approving, pending, or declining requests to extend credit.
Perform monetary and specialized account maintenance in core banking and loan origination systems in response to member requests.
Prepare and balance General Ledger (GL) transactions related to account maintenance and corrections on a regular basis.
Provide guidance and coaching to Processing and Operations staff on the justification and rationale behind consumer lending decisions, including discussion of escalated loan-related calls and inquiries from members.
Review correspondence related to consumer loan applications returned by Executive Correspondence/Loan Review Committee.
As a technical subject matter expert, works with IT to advise on software implementations, certify system changes, and perform user acceptance testing (UAT) as needed.
Liaises with third-party partners to provide guidance, oversight, and best practices relative to PenFed's Consumer Underwriting function, including indirect lending, student lending, and other lending partners.
Provide training and guidance to peers, MSRs, BSRs, and other PenFed staff related to consumer underwriting practices.
Maintain industry knowledge around emerging best practices and trends in the consumer underwriting field.
Discover opportunities to recommend changes that will streamline processes, improve efficiency and push the business forward.
Assist with maintaining PenFed's compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations and ordinances by abiding by PenFed compliance program and all policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
Assist management in reviewing and updating policies and procedures to ensure they are reflective of current Consumer Underwriting practices.


Education and Experience
Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.

Bachelor's Degree in a related field is strongly preferred.
Minimum of two (2) years' of experience in financial services, preferably in a lending or loan processing environment, is strongly preferred.
Minimum of one (1) year experience in an underwriting capacity is required.
Experience coaching, leading, and developing subordinates is preferred.
Knowledge of PenFed structure, products, policies and procedures is a plus.

Licenses and Certifications

Must obtain and maintain designated senior level lending authority.


Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to an indoor office setting with moderate noise.
*Most roles require working in an office setting with moderate noise and the ability to lift 25 pounds.*

Travel
Limited travel to various worksites is required.
